U of M tops ranking of best hospitals in Michigan
U.S. News & World Report has identified 34 high-performing hospitals in Michigan out of more than 175 hospitals statewide. The rankings were released earlier this week.
Regional rankings around the country are based on how hospitals compare nationally in 16 medical specialties.
The University of Michigan Hospitals and Health Centers ranked first. Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak came in second. Harper University Hospital in Detroit and Spectrum Health in Grand Rapids tied for third. Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit came in fourth, followed by Beaumont Hospital in Troy and Munson Medical Center in Traverse City. McLaren Regional Medical Center in Flint, Oakwood Hospital and Medical Center in Dearborn and Providence Hospital in Southfield tied for eighth.
This is the first year U.S. News has published state-by-state rankings, including sub-rankings by metro area and by region. For Michigan, that means additional rankings for Detroit, Grand Rapids, Northeastern Michigan, Northwestern Michigan, Southeastern Michigan, Southwestern Michigan and the Upper Peninsula.
The report also identifies the top children’s hospitals in Michigan. The University of Michigan C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital comes in first, followed by the Children’ s Hospital of Michigan in Detroit and the Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital in Grand Rapids.
The top four Michigan hospitals also made national rankings in certain specialties.
For hospitals to rank nationally, they must be in the top 25 percent of qualifying hospitals in 12 specialties. The remaining four specialties — Ophthalmology, Psychiatry, Rehabilitation and Rheumatology — are assessed based on reputations and surveys of medical specialists.
