Public Documents
Michigan Radio makes a series of documents accessible to the public as part of its responsibility to the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB), which supports the station through annual Community Service Grants (CSGs), and to the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). Documents available for public review include a list of station senior/executive management, a list of the board of directors and a schedule of the board’s open meetings, complete annual financial statements, a diversity statement, and a local content and service report.

Senior/Executive Management
Michigan Radio’s Executive Director/General Manager Stephen Schram is responsible for oversight and management of the station. Day-to-day operations are further managed by a team of senior managers, as listed below. Governing Board Members
Michigan Radio (WUOM/WFUM/WVGR) is licensed by the Federal Communications Commission to the Regents of the University of Michigan, which is governed by an eight member Board of Regents elected at-large in biennial state elections. Michigan Radio does not have a separate Community Advisory Board.

Open Board Meetings
The University of Michigan Board of Regents’ 2017 meetings are scheduled to take place at the Michigan Union on the UM Ann Arbor campus, except as indicated, on the following dates: February 16, March 16 (UM-Dearborn), April 20, May 18, June 15, July 20, September 21, October 19 (UM-Flint), and December 7. All formal sessions of the board are open to the public, and the meeting schedule and agenda are published on the Board of Regents website the week of the meeting.

If, on the rare occasion, a board meeting is closed to the public in order to discuss sensitive or confidential information related to its public broadcasting station, Michigan Radio will post a notice on this webpage within a reasonable time following the closed meeting.

Financial Records
Michigan Radio undergoes an annual financial audit and makes its audited statements available to the public on this webpage. The station’s audited financial statements for the past five years are listed below in addition to the Annual Financial Reports (AFRs) prepared for the CPB.

Michigan Radio Diversity Statement:
Michigan Radio continually strives to increase cultural, racial and gender diversity among its staff in order to be reflective, to the greatest extent possible, of the state’s people. When recruiting new staff members, the station posts its job opportunities with a broad range of resource groups, like the Asian American Journalists Association, National Association of Black Journalists and diversity.com, in an effort to increase the number of diverse, qualified applicants. The station also encourages and supports its staff members, including those from diverse backgrounds, in joining professional organizations (i.e., National Association of Hispanic Journalists, The Association of LGBTQ Journalists) and in participating in training and networking opportunities provided by those organizations.

As reported in Michigan Radio’s 2015 CPB Station Activities Survey (SAS), the station has 52 full- and part-time staff members. Approximately 70% of the station’s employees are female and approximately 8% identify with a minority race or ethnicity. The station’s governing board, the Regents of the University of Michigan, is comprised of eight state officials elected by the public. Fifty percent of the board’s membership is female, and 25% identifies with a minority race or ethnicity. Michigan Radio is making strides toward diversifying its staff through broad recruitment efforts, participation in various career fairs and the expansion of its internship program. The Robben Fleming Public Media Internship Fund was established in 2016 to help bring new perspectives to Michigan Radio’s work and to prepare the next generation of journalists. The program provides on-the-job learning opportunities for young people from all backgrounds, including those who may not be in a position to otherwise accept an unpaid position.

Michigan Radio is also making concerted efforts to increase cultural, racial and gender diversity among the news sources used in its reporting through extensive networking and through the development of a Source Database. The station is also working to broaden its audiences/participants through the development of relatable content, such as airing programs that appeal to a younger, more diverse audience, creating original podcasts, and sponsoring a series of wide-ranging community events.

Lastly, Michigan Radio’s news coverage is made accessible to a broad audience, regardless of economic condition, disability or other demonstrable factor, through the use of a radio and/or computer (listening to audio and/or reading text).  In addition, the station’s studios are handicap accessible for employees, on-air guests, and visitors.

Local Content and Service Report
Each year Michigan Radio completes a Local Content and Service Report on various station activities, such as programming and community impact, to the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. The completion of this report helps the station comply with the Communications Act and to be eligible to receive CPB Community Service Grants. This report is part of the CPB Station Activities Survey (SAS), which can be viewed in its entirety at Michigan Radio’s main office.

Michigan Radio holds itself to the highest standards of journalism in order to provide listeners with the most valuable, honest, and relevant news.  Truth, fairness, trust, and accountability are at the core of Michigan Radio’s obligation to uphold journalistic integrity. The station adheres to the code of ethics designed by the Radio Television Digital News Association (RTDNA). The RTDNA Code of Ethics outlines the most important tenets all professional electronic journalists should follow. Michigan Radio has also adopted ethics codes and statements of the following: Public Media Code of Integrity, Society of Professional Journalists, and Public Radio News Directors Inc.
