(AP) - Michigan is giving school districts more flexibility in making up for snow days this academic year.

Districts that had scheduled more than the required 174 days of school can now hold just that number if they still meet the required 1,098 hours per school year. Schools that exceeded the six canceled days allowed under state law may not need makeup days.

Schools that need to add more days to the end of the school year can receive state funding as long as they have 60% of students in attendance on those days. That's down from the regular 75% attendance requirement.

Gov. Rick Snyder recently signed legislation allowing for the changes after record snowfall and harsh temperatures this past winter.

Mon, 21 Apr 2014 19:05:27 +0000 Mark Brush 17295 at http://michiganradio.org School districts get leeway in making up snow days Should school districts add minutes or days after snow days? State Board of Education opposes snow-day bill http://michiganradio.org/post/state-board-education-opposes-snow-day-bill
The State Board of Education is recommending Michigan public school districts add additional days, not additional hours, to the school year to make up for this year’s snow days.

Last year, Gov. Rick Snyder signed a bill allowing districts exceeding the state's snow day limit to add hours to class time instead of extra days.

But the law only applied for the 2012-2013 school year.

Now legislators in Lansing are trying to extend that option indefinitely with House Bill 5285.

State Rep. Phil Potvin, R-Cadillac, a sponsor of the bill, says districts who choose to make up for lost instruction time will have to add a minimum of 30 minutes to the school day.

Thu, 13 Feb 2014 18:14:57 +0000 Michigan Radio Newsroom 16433 at http://michiganradio.org State Board of Education opposes snow-day bill A check of the weather with MLive's Mark Torregrossa http://michiganradio.org/post/check-weather-mlives-mark-torregrossa
This time the forecasters did not cry wolf.
