MSU researchers talked with African-Americans living in Michigan.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p><p>Researcher Stevie Yap says they found people who said that &lsquo;being black&rsquo; was an important part of their life and gave them a sense of &lsquo;belongingness&rdquo; to a wider community.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p><blockquote><p>&quot;We did also find the sense of belongingness&hellip;the degree to which that is a mechanism&hellip;in racial identity to happiness&hellip;that is especially the case for women.&rdquo;</p></blockquote><p>The MSU study appears in the current issue of <a href="http://www.apa.org/pubs/journals/cdp/">Cultural Diversity and Ethnic Minority Psychology</a>.
