vietnam war http://michiganradio.org en Veterans Day celebrated in Flint this morning http://michiganradio.org/post/veterans-day-celebrated-flint-morning <p>It's Veterans Day, and all across Michigan, small ceremonies are taking place honoring the nation's military veterans.</p><p>A light rain fell in Flint as a small ceremony was held at 11 a.m.</p><p><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Veterans_Day">Veterans Day</a> has it's roots in the Armistice that ended World War I. Under the terms of the armistice, that war ended at <a href="http://blog.usni.org/2009/11/11/the-11th-hour-of-the-11th-day-of-the-11th-month-when-the-guns-fell-silent">"The 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month."</a></p><p>Vietnam era veteran Raul Garcia told the small group assembled in front of Flint city hall of his pride of being part of a military family.</p><p>"To me, it's just a great pride to wear this uniform knowing that we are the greatest nation around," Garcia said.&nbsp;</p><p>There are more than 650,000 military veterans in Michigan.</p><p> Mon, 11 Nov 2013 16:59:22 +0000 Steve Carmody 15221 at http://michiganradio.org Veterans Day celebrated in Flint this morning 43 years later, a Vietnam veteran gets his Purple Heart http://michiganradio.org/post/43-years-later-vietnam-veteran-gets-his-purple-heart <p>A Vietnam veteran finally received one of the nation&#39;s highest military honors on this Independence Day.</p><p>Arnold Spencer got his Purple Heart more than four decades after he was wounded in the leg and refused medical evacuation.</p><p>Spencer was only 19 years old when he served as an artillery forward observer in an infantry unit in Vietnam. &nbsp;&nbsp;</p><p>He was wounded in a firefight, but turned down a medical evacuation, allowing a more seriously-injured soldier to go in his place, and returned to his unit.</p> Wed, 04 Jul 2012 22:50:46 +0000 Sarah Cwiek 8149 at http://michiganradio.org 43 years later, a Vietnam veteran gets his Purple Heart Marking the 50th anniversary of the start of the Vietnam War http://michiganradio.org/post/marking-50th-anniversary-start-vietnam-war <p>The federal government this year will observe the 50th anniversary of the start of the Vietnam War.</p><p>Many Vietnam veterans feel they have been overlooked or disrespected.</p><p>A group of Vietnam veterans took part in Memorial Day observances today in Dearborn. &nbsp;&nbsp;Tony Gramer served in Vietnam in 1968.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; He&rsquo;s glad to see the recognition.</p><p>&ldquo;Better late than never,&rdquo; says Gramer,&nbsp; &ldquo;I think it&rsquo;s the right thing to do.&nbsp; I feel that all the veterans deserve it.&rdquo;</p><p>The federal government is asking businesses and other groups to organize events commemorating the Vietnam War for the next 13 years, culminating with the 50th anniversary of the Fall of Saigon.&nbsp; Mon, 28 May 2012 13:49:19 +0000 Steve Carmody 7641 at http://michiganradio.org Marking the 50th anniversary of the start of the Vietnam War Dearborn continues Memorial Day tradition http://michiganradio.org/post/dearborn-continues-memorial-day-tradition <p>The city of Dearborn held its 87<sup>th</sup> annual Memorial Day parade Monday.</p><p>It&rsquo;s the longest-running Memorial Day celebration in the state.</p><p>This year&rsquo;s parade honored veterans of the Vietnam War. The airmen were reportedly shot down in 1969 and have been missing ever since.</p><p>The government says the remains belong to 34-year-old Col. James E. Dennany of Kalamazoo and 27-year-old Maj. Robert L.
