The goal is to create a grassy environment that will promote growth of colorful lupine plants, on which the butterflies feed during their caterpillar stage.

Other species that thrive in such a setting include Hill's thistle, the golden-winged warbler, dusted skipper, and eastern box turtle. It's also good for game species such as wild turkey, white-tailed deer and ruffed grouse.

The Forest Service will remove some trees and set controlled fires to develop the savannah habitat. It also will close many unauthorized "two-track" roads that cause erosion.

More information about efforts to protect the Karner blue can be found on the Environment Report, or if you are feeling festive, consider attending the Karner Blue Butterfly Festival this summer in Black River Falls, Wisconsin.

-John Klein Wilson, Michigan Radio Newsroom

Mon, 11 Jun 2012 16:02:29 +0000 Michigan Radio Newsroom 7836 at http://michiganradio.org U.S. Forest Service restoring endangered butterfly habitat in West Michigan Urban Forest Stewardship Program wraps up first year in Detroit http://michiganradio.org/post/urban-forest-stewardship-program-wraps-first-year-detroit
Some Detroit Public Schools students involved in the Urban Forest Stewardship Program showed off their work this past weekend.

Eight Detroit middle and high schools participated in the program on Belle Isle this year.

Their projects included beach clean-ups, water quality testing, invasive species control, and clearing a new nature trail.

Tracy Ortiz, a sixth-grade science teacher at Detroit’s Clippert Academy, says the projects have introduced many of her students many of her students to natural world—and taught them science in a way that sticks.
Mon, 21 May 2012 20:00:57 +0000 Sarah Cwiek 7554 at http://michiganradio.org Urban Forest Stewardship Program wraps up first year in Detroit
