Zoe Clark

Zoe Clark is a producer as well as the co-host of the Friday afternoon segment It's Just Politics on Michigan Radio. She produces Morning Edition, Jack Lessenberry’s daily essays, and Michigan Radio’s local interviews, including those by All Things Considered host Jennifer White and Morning Edition host Christina Shockley. She is also a substitute on-air host. She has been at Michigan Radio since 2006.

Zoe began her collegiate studies at George Washington University in Washington, D.C. She holds degrees in Communication Studies and Political Science from the University of Michigan and lives in Ann Arbor, where she was born and raised.

Granholm signs first part of a budget deal

Governor Granholm has signed the first part of a budget deal that includes tapping the School Aid Fund to help retire a deficit. The bill shifts $208-million dollars from the schools fund and gives it to community colleges. That frees up funds to help eliminate about half of this year's budget shortfall. The governor and legislative leaders say it's a one-time measure that helps avert bigger cuts to critical services in the current fiscal year.

There's A New Czar In Town

The White House has appointed a new "Asian Carp Czar."  Former Indiana environmental chief John Goss was tapped to coordinate the federal response to the Asian Carp.  Governor Granholm says she intends to get in touch with Goss soon.  The Chicago Breaking News Center explains the problems the fish cause:

Back to Court Over Carp

Michigan and four other states head back to federal court today in hopes of keeping Asian Carp out of the Great Lakes. They'll try to make their case to close Illinois River access to Lake Michigan in order to keep the fish out. A decision is not expected this week.

The Gongwer News Service and Detroit News are reporting that Democratic nominee for Governor Virg Bernero has chosen Southfield Mayor Brenda Lawrence as a running mate.

Bernero to name Lt. Gov on Saturday

A campaign official says Democratic candidate for Governor Virg Bernero will name his running mate Saturday morning.

It's still unknown just who it will be.

Bernero will name his nominee for Lt. Gov at 9:30AM in Detroit.

The announcment will come as Democrats attend thier state nominating convention at Cobo Hall in Detroit.

Republican gubernatorial candidate Rick Snyder announced his choice of state Representative Brian Calley as his running mate on Wednesday.

Snyder leads Bernero in latest poll

A new poll shows Republican gubernatorial candidate Rick Snyder leading Democrat Virg Bernero.

The EPIC-MRA poll, released yesterday, showed 51% of voters favored Snyder, 29% backed Bernero.  Interestingly enough, with 10 weeks to go before the November 2nd election, 1 in 5 voters say they are still undecided.

Snyder spent $2.3 million on TV ads before the Aug. 3 primary. He's now better known and more favorably regarded by voters than the Lansing mayor.

Stabbing suspect awaits trial in county jail

Elias Abuelazam, the man suspected in more than a dozen stabbings in Flint, made his first court appearance yesterday. A motive for the crimes is still unknown. Genesee County prosecutor David Leyton says he will seek a life sentence for Abuelazam.
