After a long campaign to get it built, the Ann Arbor city council voted to approve a $1 million contract to build a skatepark at last night's meeting.

From the Ann Arbor Skatepark Facebook Page:

Passed unanimously. As soon as contracts are signed, & other details finalized, construction will begin. We skate before the snow flies.

And here's more from the Ann Arbor Chronicle

The Ann Arbor city council has given the final approval necessary for the creation of a skatepark in the northwest corner of Veterans Memorial Park, on the west side of the city. That approval took the form of a unanimous vote on a $1,031,592 contract with Krull Construction. Construction could start in early August, with completion of the concrete portion of the skatepark by this November – weather permitting.

Ann Arbor is behind the times. Skateparks can be found all over the state.

With the construction of this park in Ann Arbor, that will bring Michigan's total number of skateparks closer to 100, according to a map on the Concrete Disciples website.

Trevor Staples, president of the "Friends of the Ann Arbor Skatepark" wrote about the time it took to get approval on a recent blog post:

One of the hardest things about being part of this project is seeing skaters wait and wait and wait for this thing to be built. There are kids who got excited when we first started, and they’re heading off to college now. Some of us were in our late 30s when this started, and now we’re in our mid-40s. No one wanted this skatepark built quickly more than the couple dozen volunteers in our organization who have worked tirelessly for it to happen. We all have “day” jobs, families, lives, bills, and all the other things life gives us. But, we’ve dedicated ourselves to making the Ann Arbor Skatepark happen.
