A frustrated Ann Arbor City Council wants to force a faster cleanup of a plume of groundwater contaminated with 1,4 dioxane.
That's after the chemical was found in surface water near Slauson Middle School.
The contaminated water is slowly spreading under the city of Ann Arbor as well as Ann Arbor Township and Scio Township.
City leaders say the polluter, Pall Gelman, needs to do a lot more to clean it up.
But the city can't turn to the courts, because it is not a named party to a consent agreement between Pall Gelman and the state Department of Environmental Quality.
On Monday, the city council will hold a special meeting to vote on a resolution directing the city administrator to seek assistance from its Congressional delegation to investigate if the MDEQ is violating the Clean Water and Safe Drinking Water Acts in its oversight of the cleanup.
The resolution will also direct the city administrator to explore options for "more expeditious and effective cleanup efforts," including possible collaboration with Washtenaw County, Scio Township, Ann Arbor Township, and other affected jurisdictions.
