Ann Arbor funds Rail Study

Ann Arbor’s city council is exploring options for a new train station.

The council has approved over a half million dollars to identify the best improvements for Ann Arbor’s passenger rail services.

“We’re looking at a situation where if we don’t accommodate commuters with expanded transit, we’re just going to have to build more parking structures, have more traffic congestion and air pollution.” says Mayor John Hieftje.

The trains he says “are going to be going at a hundred miles an hour in a couple of years.  Ridership could double or triple has been the experience of AmTrak so we’re trying to be ready for that.”

Once the study is complete, a voter referendum would determine how to move forward.
