Amick is the author of The Lake, the River & the Other Lake, which takes place in a fictional town on the west side of the state. His second book, Nothing But a Smile, takes place mostly in Chicago at the end of World War II, but there are a number of Ann Arbor locations featured in the book.
When asked what he considers to be important Michigan books, Amick couldn't narrow it down to just one. Instead, he offers up this list of books of interest:
- Fireweed by Mildred Walker
- Whistle Up the Bay by Nancy Stone and Betty Beeby
- Short Girls by Bich Minh Nguyen
- The English Major by Jim Harrison
- Grab On to Me Tightly as if I Knew the Way by Bryan Charles
