Our occasional literary series highlights includes conversations with Michigan authors.

On today's podcast, we talk with Michigan author Steve Amick about writing, humor, and the character of writers from the state. It's part of Michigan Radio's occasional literary series, Michigan on the Page.

Amick is the author of The Lake, the River & the Other Lake, which takes place in a fictional town on the west side of the state. His second book, Nothing But a Smile, takes place mostly in Chicago at the end of World War II, but there are a number of Ann Arbor locations featured in the book.

When asked what he considers to be important Michigan books, Amick couldn't narrow it down to just one. Instead, he offers up this list of books of interest:

  • Fireweed by Mildred Walker
  • Whistle Up the Bay by Nancy Stone and Betty Beeby
  • Short Girls by Bich Minh Nguyen
  • The English Major by Jim Harrison
  • Grab On to Me Tightly as if I Knew the Way by Bryan Charles
Jennifer is a reporter for Michigan Radio's State of Opportunity project, which looks at kids from low-income families and what it takes to get them ahead. She previously covered arts and culture for the station, and was one of the lead reporters on the award-winning education series Rebuilding Detroit Schools. Prior to working at Michigan Radio, Jennifer lived in New York where she was a producer at WFUV, an NPR station in the Bronx.
