Baby born to woman in dispute with hospital over tubal ligation

ACLU Michigan

A woman involved in a controversial fight with a mid-Michigan hospital has given birth to a baby girl.

Jessica Mann suffers from a brain tumor. Her doctors advised her that she should undergo a tubal ligation after delivering her baby.

But Genesys Regional Medical Center officials said no to the sterilization procedure. They cite guidelines in line with the facility’s ties to the Catholic Church.

Last week, the American Civil Liberties Union filed a complaint against the hospital with the Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs.

An ACLU spokesman says Mann gave birth to a healthy daughter over the weekend, and then underwent the tubal ligation. He did not say where this took place.

The spokesman says the case will continue.
