Bacon: To beat Ohio State, Michigan must "pull about five rabbits out of a hat"

Brandon Peters, UM quarterback, was carted off the field with an injury this past weekend against Wisconsin.

John U. Bacon, Michigan Radio’s sports commentator, joined Stateside today for a roundup of the week’s sports news.

On UM’s Brandon Peters

University of Michigan quarterback Brandon Peters was carted out of his team’s game against Wisconsin this past Saturday after a heavy hit. When John O’Korn replaced Peters, the momentum flipped and Wisconsin expanded their lead, winning the game. “It is some form of head injury, we don’t know how severe,” said Bacon.

That doesn’t look good for the 8-3 UM, which faces Ohio State next week. To win the game, Bacon said, either Peters or Wilton Speight, UM’s quarterback who was sidelined with an injury in UM’s game against Purdue, has to be playing, and “they’ve got to pull about five rabbits out of a hat, so the odds here are not very good.”

On MSU football

MSU, which also boasts an 8-3 record, has been “playing solid, serious football,” said Bacon. Not very flashy, but MSU has found success getting back to “fundamental Dantonio football,” he said. They play Rutgers next week, a team they’re expected to beat.

On the Detroit Lions

The Detroit Lions barely eked out a win in Chicago this past weekend, but “style points do not count in the NFL,” said Bacon. Now 6-4, the Lions face the Minnesota Vikings at home this Thursday and the game is a must-win to win NFC North division.
