Bill Schuette's chief deputy appointed interim U.S. Attorney

Michigan Attorney General's Office

U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions on Wednesday appointed Matthew Schneider as the interim U.S. attorney for Michigan's Eastern District. Schneider is currently serving as chief deputy to Michigan Attorney General Bill Schuette.

In that role, he oversees the office’s ongoing criminal and civil cases and manages a staff of 500 employees. Schneider was the lead counsel representing the State of Michigan and Governor Snyder in Detroit's federal bankruptcy case.

In a statement, Schuette praised Schneider as an outstanding lawyer and “a person of utmost integrity, high character and will reflect everything that is great about Michigan in his new position.”

Schneider is one of 17 federal prosecutors to be announced as interim U.S. attorneys. As of Thursday, several acting U.S. attorneys will have met their maximum term limit under the Vacancies Reform Act, prompting Sessions to fill those positions.

?The Detroit Newsreportsthat Sessions, in a statement, said Schneider’s “investigations of corrupt public officials and gangs have delivered results for the people of Eastern Michigan. In this new role, he’s going to continue that good work and help keep Michigan safe.”

Schneider will be replacing U.S. Attorney Daniel L. Lemsich, who has been the interim U.S. attorney for Michigan's Eastern District since March. The attorney general's office says Laura Moody, the state's chief legal counsel, will take over Schneider's duties
