The Michigan Court of Appeals hears arguments tomorrow over whether a ballot initiative to enshrine collective bargaining rights in the state constitution should be on the November ballot.
The “Protect Our Jobs” initiative would void all or part of 170 state laws affecting labor unions.
Republican lawmakers say the sweep of the proposed constitutional amendment isn’t clear in the ballot question.
Governor Rick Snyder filed a legal brief asking the court to reject the request to put the question on the November ballot.
“Our constitution allows us to put questions on the ballot. That system works pretty well,” says Snyder, “We’re just trying to make sure it’s being done in a proper way, in terms of making it understandable and in compliance with the constitution.”
Labor unions have donated millions of dollars to Michigan’s collective bargaining ballot question campaign.
The court fight must be resolved by August 27th. That's the Secretary of State's deadline to get the question on the November ballot.
