Detroit rejects plan for youth baseball at former Tiger Stadium site

The city of Detroit has again put a damper on plans to keep baseball at the site of the former Tiger Stadium.

Chevrolet had proposed a plan what it calls the “hallowed” site to create a “new ballpark for Detroit’s youth.”

Chevy said it had support from the Detroit Tigers, and a non-profit group called the Old Tiger Stadium Conservancy.

But the Detroit Economic Growth Corporation quashed the proposal. DEGC head George Jackson says it just wasn’t a good idea.

“We certainly want the highest and best use for that site. Which unfortunately is not a Little League baseball field.”

It’s a site that has freeway access, class A roads…we don’t have very many ready-to-build-on sites like that in the city of Detroit. We’ve had some recent successes with retailers, and retailers are taking a much serious look in Detroit than they have in the past.”

The Tiger Stadium site has stood vacant since the stadium was demolished in 2009.
