Detroit schools draw alumni back for National Day of Service
Detroit Public Schools worked to draw district alumni back to their
old schools for this Martin Luther King Day.
Thirty schools across the city are participating in the national day
of service, and former students are invited to join in.
Spokesman Steve Wasko said the district was searching for a way to
draw DPS alumni back to their former schools.
“And we really came to the conclusion that what would excite an alum, or
any of us, is to go back to the school they graduated from," Wasko said. "So we
blended that thought with the fact that there certainly are a great
number of needs, many of which can be served by volunteers.”
Projects ranged cleaning and re-purposing school rooms, to art projects and pick-up basketball games.
Wasko said the district hopes to make this at least a semi-annual
event for alumni.
