The Detroit Symphony Orchestra is dedicating its 3-day festival to the late Marcus Belgrave.
Belgrave was a jazz trumpeter that spent much of his life in Detroit. He toured with Ray Charles band and worked with many other musicians.
He died in Ann Arbor on May 24 from heart failure.
“His work with young musicians through his leadership position of the inaugural years of DSO's Civic Jazz program enabled our city's youth the opportunity to learn from the best, be inspired to believe in themselves and collaborate with others,” DSO President and CEO Anne Parsons said in a press release.
The festival titled "A Musical Tale of Two Cities: Motown Meets the Big Easy" starts today and will end on Thursday.
Events include a dance festival, showing and discussion of Spike Lee's documentary about Hurricane Katrina and of course, several musicians.
