'Dynamic Shoulders' could make commuting on US-23 easier

The traffic on US-23 between Brighton and Ann Arbor can be rough during rush hours, which is why the Michigan Department of Transportation is considering adopting 'dynamic shoulders' -- the road's shoulders would open as a way to alleviate traffic.

"They have been used in other states, in Europe," explained Kari Arend, spokesperson for MDOT. "So this would be the first time such a system would be implemented in Michigan"

If the proposal for dynamic shoulders is accepted, MDOT projects construction in 2016, and a finished product in 2017.

"Right now it's one option that we have out there, that again, we are taking comment on and look to get opinion on from the public as a way to help us manage traffic and improve safety along the corridor," Arend said.

MDOT is holding a public hearing today at 4 p.m. at Northfield Township Hall for anyone with questions or concerns. Read more about the hearing here
