Michigan’s Secretary of State’s office has lost another round in court over suspending the driver’s licenses.
The state wanted a delay on a ruling that blocked the state from suspending the driver’s licenses of motorists who are unable to pay their traffic fines.
U.S. District Judge Linda Parker issued a preliminary injunction on December 14.
In her ruling, Judge Parker said it’s “unfair to deprive individuals of their driver’s licenses due to their failure to pay traffic fines they are unable to pay.”
The state asked the judge to delay enforcement of her decision pending the outcome of its appeal to the U.S. 6th Circuit Court of Appeals. But today, the judge said no.
According to a report released in September, about 100,000 people in Michigan currently have their licenses suspended for inability to pay court fees.
