The Flint city council will do something today it hasn’t done in four years: play a role in writing the city’s budget.
An emergency manager has made all Flint’s budget decisions since 2011.
But that’s changing.
The city may begin the transition back to local control later this year.
Flint’s mayor and city council will get a greater say this spring, and that starts this week.
Flint city council president Josh Freeman says it will be a new experience for most council members.
“Since being elected they’ve been under an emergency manager who has had that total control of the budgeting process,” says Freeman.
Flint is has a $9 million budget deficit.
