Flint schools get $480K federal grant to deal with city's water crisis

Oct 7, 2016

The Flint public school district is getting money from the federal government to help address critical needs arising from the city’s water crisis.

U.S. Secretary of Education John King, Jr. was in Flint today to discuss the $480,000 grant.

“(The grant) will provide resources to support things like school based counseling….and mental health services,” said King.

Experts are concerned about the effect exposure to Flint’s lead-tainted tap water will have on the city’s school children. Lead contamination has been linked to learning disabilities and other problems in kids.

The city's water supply was contaminated with the heavy metal after water from the Flint River wasn't treated to reduce corrosiveness.
