Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan speaks at Adient press conference at Cobo Hall.

The world's largest global automotive seating supplier announced today it will establish its new headquarters in Detroit.

The Milwaukee-based company Adient chose Detroit to build its new headquarters because of the economic opportunity it sees in the downtown area.

Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan said he's proud that companies want to move to the city.

“To move their global headquarters to Detroit is a message to every major company in America that Detroit is a place that you want to be,” Duggan said.

Adient will be the first Fortune 500 Company to establish new headquarters in Michigan in over a decade. The last was Borg Warner in 2003 when it moved from Chicago to Auburn Hills.

Bruce McDonald is the Chairman and CEO of Adient.

He says hundreds of jobs will be heading downtown in the move.

“We'll have about 500 people from Adient working here, and I just couldn't be more excited to be leading the team as we relocate to our new offices.”

Of the 500 jobs heading to downtown Detroit, 100 of them will be brand new.

Adient will invest $50 million into renovating Detroit's historic Marquette building, where it will be located.
