The bacterial outbreak was linked back to the mushrooms on the pizzas.

Michigan is known as an automotive capital, but with Little Caesars, Domino's, HungryHowie's, and Jet’s headquartered here, Michigan can make a good case that our state is also a pizza capital. As far as we know, Michigan is the only state to have had a pizza funeral.

Mark Harvey, a state archivist from the Michigan History Center, joined Stateside to tell us about the Great Pizza Funeral of 1973.

Listen to the full conversation above to hear what caused the funeral, who attended, and what the experience was like.

This segment is produced in partnership with theMichigan History Center.

Support for arts and culture coverage comes in part from the Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs.
