Gov. Snyder's pick to lead MDEQ faces legislative scrutiny

Gov. Snyder office
Gov. Rick Snyder appointed Heidi Grether in July to lead the Department of Environmental Quality

This week…a state senate committee holds a hearing on Governor Snyder’s pick to head the Department of Environmental Quality.

Heidi Grether is a former oil and gas industry lobbyist.  That doesn’t sit well with Mike Berkowitz. He’s the Sierra Club’s legislative and political director.

Berkowitz thinks the person picked to lead the state agency tasked with protecting the environment should have a different background.

“We need someone who has direct experience protecting the environment,” says Berkowitz, “Not someone who’s background is more suited to advocate for the polluters she would be in charge of regulating in this position.”

Governor Snyder defends Grether insisting she will do a good job at DEQ.
