A new civics program is designed to help people new to Grand Rapids adjust to the city.

The Our City Academy program focuses on how to navigate the city and how to find important city and county facilities.

The city of Grand Rapids is partnering with Grand Rapids Public Schools to make the program possible.

Teresa Weatherall-Neal is the superintendent of Grand Rapids Public Schools. She says the program is designed to help newcomers, but she'd like to see it added to some school curriculums.

“I think there's information here that kids can learn from, and so I would love to see this expanded so that our kids can learn how to navigate the city as well,” Weatherall-Neal said.

Weatherall-Neal and Mayor Rosalynn Bliss spoke about the program earlier this week at the Grand Rapids City Commission meeting.

The program is offering several workshops over the next few months. You can learn more at the city's website
