Hearing planned on mine's water discharge permit

MARQUETTE (AP) - State regulators will answer questions from the public about a proposed surface water discharge permit for the Eagle Mine and Humboldt Mill in the Upper Peninsula.

  The Michigan Department of Environmental Quality is conducting a public hearing on the permit January 13th, 2015. It begins at 6 p.m. at the Westwood High School Auditorium in Ishpeming.
  DEQ staffers will answer questions about the draft permit, then convene the public hearing.

The agency will accept additional public comments through Jan. 16. Comments should be submitted to: Alvin Lam, Permits Section, Water Resources Division, Department of Environmental Quality, P.O. Box 30458, Lansing, Mich. 48909-7958.

  Production of nickel and copper began this fall at the mine in northwestern Marquette County.
