On Tuesday evening, hundreds of demonstrators gathered in cities across the state, including Grand Rapids, and Ann Arbor and Detroit where crowds blocked traffic, to protest the Grand Jury decision in the Ferguson case regarding Michael Brown and officer Darren Wilson. At Rosa Parks Circle in Grand Rapids, the crowd observed a moment of silence for Michael Brown, the unarmed black 18 year old who was fatally shot by Wilson, a white police officer.
Michigan State police were called to areas in Detroit where protestors blocked rush hour traffic along some I-75 and I-94 ramps. One group marched from Greektown to the Hall of Justice. A separate rally gathered outside the Detroit Police Department on Gratiot Avenue.
In Ann Arbor, protestors marched from the University of Michigan campus to the downtown police station. Some were there to also draw attention to the Nov. 9 fatal shooting of 40-year-old Aura Rosser by local police. Rosser allegedly confronted officers with a knife.
While most of the protests across the state were peaceful, 5 people were arrested in Detroit for disorderly conduct and a police car window was broken in Kalamazoo.
