John U. Bacon talks Tigers, Lions, Red Wings, and Big Ten

John U. Bacon

John U. Bacon joins us again for this week’s sports roundup.

Tigers lose to Royals

According to Bacon, the Tigers' story hasn’t changed.

“There’s nothing to see here, people,” he says, explaining that the team showed their hand at the end of the trade deadline some weeks ago.

“When the front office gives up on the season, then the players basically do, I don’t know why they’d expect the fans wouldn’t,” Bacon says. “Skip this season, wait for next year.”

Lions lose to Vikings

The Lions dropped to 0-2 after a 26-16 loss to the Vikings on Sunday.

Bacon says the team is really feeling the loss of defender Ndamukong Suh.

Bacon was also disappointed in quarterback Matt Stafford’s performance.

“He looks like a kid getting bullied on a playground,” he says. “Look, it’s a tough business, I get that … but every time he takes his lumps it seems like he’s going to go into the fetal position.”

Bacon says if you’re going to stand out as a professional quarterback, you can’t let the other team know they’re getting to you, “and [Stafford] always does.”

Red Wings open in Chicago

The Red Wings will open the exhibition season tonight in Chicago. It will be Jeff Blashill’s first NHL game as head coach.

Bacon tells us that he has high expectations for Blashill this season.

“You watch. In 12 months, we’re going to be saying he’s the best coach in the four major league teams in Detroit,” he says.

Spartans second only to Buckeyes

Michigan State has reached the number two spot in the Associated Press poll, their highest ranking since 1966.

With Ohio State holding the top spot, Bacon tells us this could mean exciting things for the Big Ten, but says we shouldn't get too excited just yet.

“Right now, my take is that there are no great teams in college football,” Bacon says. “I think Buckeyes are good to very good, I think Michigan State is good to very good, no one yet is great.”
