A prominent Democratic politician will be a featured speaker at a marijuana legalization rally in Ann Arbor tomorrow.

Lansing Mayor Virg Bernero is quick to point out he’s never smoked pot. But the former Democratic candidate for governor says he now supports legalizing it.

Bernero says his views on pot have changed.  He says Michigan should follow the examples of other states and regulate marijuana. He says that would take it out of the hands of criminals.

“We are feeding crime gangs and criminal elements … by keeping it in the shadows,” says Bernero.

Bernero will speak at Saturday’s Hash Bash event in Ann Arbor. The event takes place as a major effort gears up to put a legalization question on the November 2016 ballot.
