Lingering winter means skiing is still alive in northern Michigan

Thanks to continuing cold temperatures and snowfall, Michigan is not yet done with skiing for the season.

Three mountains will be open this weekend: Mount Bohemia, Boyne Mountain, and Ski Brule. Bohemia is reopening after closing this past week, while Boyne and Brule have yet to close.

Parts of the Upper Peninsula have seen unusually high snowfall this month. Marquette, MI is already having the fifth-snowiest April on record, with over 32 inches of snow already, according to the local division of the National Weather Service.

Some parts of the UP have seen as much as 12 inches in just the past three days.

Jeff McMahon, operations manager at Mount Bohemia in the UP, said the mountain will stay open to skiers as long as there's enough snow. McMahon said Bohemia has about six inches and more is on the way.

"We want to ski as late as we possibly can. While we have the snow, we're going to be open to our pass-holders," he said.

Erin Ernst is communications director for Boyne Mountain. She said Boyne has actually skied into April the past four seasons.

She said the conditions still make for good skiing.

"The temperature is dipping back down so often, and staying cool at night is really helping to preserve the snow and then allowing it to set up really well," she said. "We've got great conditions on the slopes."

Looking ahead, forecasts predict warmer weather is just around the corner.
