A major state newspaper is calling for the president of Michigan State University to resign or be fired.

Ina blistering editorial, the Lansing State Journal says it’s time for Lou Anna K. Simon to leave the president’s office at MSU.  The reason: Her handling of numerous sexual assault allegations. The editorial compares MSU’s problem with the Jerry Sandusky scandal at Penn State.

The paper acknowledges the positive aspects of Simon’s dozen years in East Lansing.

But the editorial focuses on the cost, in both money and reputation, ofthe university’s handling of assaultallegations against students, football players and former gymnastics doctorLarry Nassar.

The Lansing State Journal says if Simon doesn’t resign the MSU Board of Trustees should fire her.

The MSU Trustees issued a statement in support of Simon, saying in part "she is the right leader for this university."
