Lon Johnson is expected to be chosen as chairman again at the party's convention Saturday afternoon in Detroit. He took charge in 2013.

He says the party's infrastructure has improved under his watch, but Democrats have to start winning races.

Last year's midterm elections were successful for Republicans. But Democrats stand to fare better in 2016, when voter turnout will be higher for the presidential election.

U.S. Sens. Debbie Stabenow and Gary Peters are among the Democratic leaders planning to help fire up party activists at the Cobo Center.
