Michigan libraries receiving Muslim collection
DETROIT (AP) - Nearly fifty Michigan libraries and its state humanities council are receiving a collection of books, films and other resources about Muslims in the United States and around the world.
The Muslim Journeys Bookshelf collection was developed by the National Endowment for the Humanities and American Library Association. Each library will receive 25 books, three films and a year of access to Oxford Islamic Studies Online.
Officials say the program aims to introduce the broader U.S. public to the "complex history and culture of Muslims" through "trustworthy and accessible resources."
The collection has been awarded to 842 libraries and institutions nationwide.
Detroit Democratic U.S. Rep. John Conyers said in a release Thursday that he "applauded the National Endowment for the Humanities for fostering cross-cultural discussions."
