Michigan Republican party doesn't address anti-gay comments

LANSING, Mich. (AP) - Michigan Republicans have taken no official steps to rebuke the kinds of anti-gay comments made recently by GOP National Committee member Dave Agema.

The party's meeting on Saturday in Lansing didn't deal with a measure proposed by western Michigan activist Jason Watts, submitted after the deadline for resolutions. It doesn't mention Agema but disavows the party of "demagogic rhetoric that is incendiary and unbecoming of civil discourse."

Agema told Berrien County Republicans last week that gays want free medical care for their same-sex partners because they're dying of AIDS.

Top Republicans including Gov. Rick Snyder have condemned Agema's comments.

Agema didn't discuss the issue at the meeting but promoted the party platform, which defines marriage as between a man and woman. He also urged the party to avoid political correctness.
