Law enforcement officials are choosing sides in the Detroit mayor’s race.
And perhaps not surprisingly, Wayne County Sheriff Benny Napoleon has earned their support.
Some major Detroit Police and Wayne County Sheriffs union officials endorsed Napoleon Tuesday, as did Wayne County prosecutor Kym Worthy.
Worthy says that when it comes to tackling Detroit’s crime problem, Napoleon “gets it,” unlike current leaders.
“I am sick and tired of people saying that public safety is important. [But] when you go to them with your very real life problems — child abuse warrants stacking up, your homicide rate is out of control — just trying to do your job … nobody cares,” Worthy said.
Napoleon welcomed Worthy’s endorsement, calling her “one of the most respected” prosecutors nationwide.
Napoleon proposed to fight crime with, among other things, his “One Square Mile” initiative. That plan would assign a specific police officer to aggressively handle quality of life issues in each square mile of Detroit.
Napoleon is running against former Detroit Medical Center CEO Mike Duggan. Duggan is the front-runner in most recent polls, and has a significant fundraising edge.
