A new Michigan Senate bill introduced this week would close a loophole that allows open carry of firearms in gun-free zones, including schools and places of worship.
Last spring, a man caused a stir when he openly carried a handgun to a school choir concert in Ann Arbor.
That would no longer be allowed under the new bill, but there's a catch.
Concealed-carry license holders would be able to apply for an exemption that would allow them to carry a concealed weapon in gun-free zones.
If the exemption is granted, a county clerk would then have to update their license.
The measure is similar to another bill Green introduced in 2012 which cleared the House and Senate.
Gov. Rick Snyder vetoed the measure, shortly after the tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary School.
The new bill has been sent to the Senate Judiciary Committee.
