A Michigan man is in critical condition after the shooting yesterday in Alexandria, Va. during a baseball practice for Congressional Republicans.
The family of Oakland county native Matt Mika said in a statement that he suffered multiple gunshot wounds and is now in the intensive care unit at a Washington hospital. The family says they expect him to be there for several days.
Mika's family added that "baseball is one of his great passions."
"While the attack today (Wednesday) was a terrible surprise, Matt’s presence on the ball field, helping longtime colleagues and friends was not," the statement said. "He is a very thoughtful, fun-loving person who is competitive and loyal; all things which contributed to his continued commitment to the Congressional Baseball Game.”
Mika is a lobbyist for Tyson Foods. He previously worked for two Michigan Republicans: U.S. Representative Tim Walberg and former Representative David Camp.
Also among the five people wounded was House majority whip Steve Scalise (R-La.). He remains in critical, but stable condition.
