Public & art experts agree at ArtPrize

ArtPrize

A single artist captivated both the public and art experts at this year’s ArtPrize competition.

For the first time, a single artist has won both the juried and public grand prizes at ArtPrize in Grand Rapids.

Born in Pakistan, Anila Quayyum Agha teaches art at the Herron School of Art and Design at Indiana University, in Indianapolis.   Her work “intersections” consists of a six-foot cube, illuminated from within, projecting complex designs of light and shadow around a room. The effect envelops the room and all the people in it.

“I believe in making people cross boundaries where they can actually converse with each other and realize their differences are not that wide,” says Agha.

"Euphoric" is how artist Anila Quayyum Agha describes her reaction to winning both the public and jury grand prize at Grand Rapids' ArtPrize competition.

Agha will receive $300,000 for winning the public grand prize and splitting the jury prize with another artist. Sonya Clark’s Hair Craft Project is a two-dimensional work which examines hair weaving.

The 19-day run of ArtPrize concludes Sunday.

An estimated 400,000 people will visit Grand Rapids during ArtPrize, which is in its 6 year. More than 1,500 works of art have been on display.
