Governor Snyder could be called to testify before Congress about the Flint Water Crisis.
U.S. Rep. Brenda Lawrence, D-Southfield, says she's requested the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform hold a hearing.
She says she wants Governor Snyder, the Michigan Department on Environmental Quality, and the EPA to testify.
"The only way that we can find out what went wrong is to conduct this hearing and have people testify,” she says. “And we can walk through this process so we can correct it. I want to know the facts. I want to know where the breakdown happened. Where did we fail our citizens?”
Lawrence says the hearing has been approved by the committee’s Republican majority leadership, which has to ok the hearings before they can move forward.
But the committee’s chairman, Jason Chaffetz, R-UT, wouldn’t confirm that. In a statement, a spokesperson from committee’s office said:
“The details being discussed surrounding a hearing on the Flint water crisis are entirely premature. There are no confirmed details at this time, particularly with respect to a date or witness invitations.”
Meanwhile, Governor Snyder’s office emailed the following statement:
“We have not yet heard from U.S. Rep. Jason Chaffetz, chair of the Oversight and Government Reform Committee regarding a possible hearing and look forward to hearing from him. The governor is working to resolve the Flint water situation, which is the result of missteps of government at all levels – local, state and federal. Governor continues to work to bring resources to help Flint residents now and long into the future, and appreciates the support of our partners in Congress as we move forward."
