A leading U.S. Socialist says the party is connecting with young voters on issues like income inequality.
Lawrence Porter is the assistant national secretary of the Socialist Equality Party. He says socialism holds appeal for the generation s that grew up watching their country constantly at war, and that are now shouldering crushing student loan debt.
Porter says in the years since the housing crash, people have seen the banks made whole, while more and more working families slide into poverty.
Porter says on many issues there's little daylight between Republicans and Democrats. He says in Michigan, Detroit's bankruptcy is a key example, with then-mayor Dave Bing and even the Obama administration giving tacit approval to both the state takeover and the restructuring that cut retirees' pensions and health care.
