Military veterans who have a background in engineering or manufacturing can brush up on their skills with free training from a Detroit-area software company.

Siemens Product Lifestyle Management in Livonia is one of 22 locations across the country offering the classes.
"We know there's a lot of technically competent people coming back from overseas, they need to have their skills updated and this would be a great thing to do," says Siemens PLM President and CEO Chuck Grindstaff.

"They can get in one of our classes at no cost to them and learn about the technology and become a marketable re-entrant to the job market."

Grindstaff says there are 10 courses overall, ranging from basic entry-level to advanced and covering computer-aided design, engineering and manufacturing software.

He says there's a hot market in those fields for highly skilled workers.
