All summer we’ve been exploring different ways to enjoy our Michigan waters.
We’ve discovered great snorkeling, scuba diving, and even surfing. And now we can add SUP, Stand Up Paddling, to the list.
Brody Welte, a Michigan native, is based in San Diego and is the head of Paddlefit. He’s become a national leader in Stand-Up Paddling.
SUP is a mixture of surfing, kayaking, and canoeing.
Welte said it has grown so fast because it is accessible for all age ranges. It is a full workout as well, targeting your core, balance and stability, and cardio strength. Welte added that SUP also helps relieve stress.
Welte said you can stand-up paddle on any type of water, whether its white water or calm, flat water.
“Michigan has the potential to have the most amount of stand-up paddlers in the U.S. because of all the access to water,” Welte said. “It’s on its way to becoming huge.”
