The Michigan Department of Natural Resources plans to release 100,000 Atlantic salmon into Lake Huron and two of its tributaries this spring.
This is the first time the DNR has successfully stocked the fish since the 1970s, said Todd Grischke, the DNR's Lake Huron Basin Coordinator.
"Beginning in 2010 we began to rear Atlantic salmon eggs up to the stage where they were ready to be stocked, and this is the first year where we've truly been successful."
Lake Superior State University has been stocking the fish for about twenty years. Typically LSSU releases 20,000 or 30,000 fish per year, Grischke said.
Grischke also said salmon native to the lake have been decimated because invasive species have eaten their food source. But, he said, the DNR believes the Atlantic salmon will thrive because they're " more of a generalist in its feeding behavior."
