Today, House Democratic Leader Tim Greimel spoke with Cyndy about his reaction to Governor Snyder’s State of the State address.
“We stand willing and eager to work together in a bipartisan way to move our state forward and we’ll have to whether the Republicans show that same willingness,” Greimel said.
He thinks Democrats could possibly agree with Snyder's proposal to allow voters to register online.
Greimel also sees common ground in efforts to increase access to mental healthcare and in increased funding for early-childhood education.
“Investing in quality, early-childhood education actually saves the state money in the long-run. Young people who receive that quality education are much less-likely to end up in prison or on welfare,” said Greimel.
Greimel said he's worried that middle-class families could bear the burden of funding Governor Snyder's transportation proposal.
“Let’s be clear: Democrats are not necessarily keen on raising taxes, especially when those taxes hit middle-class families in our state. That’s actually been one of our big concerns with what the governor has done over the past two years, is that the governor together with legislative Republicans dramatically slashed taxes for big corporations in the state and paid for it through cuts to education and by raising taxes on middle-class and working families. We think that’s the wrong direction to go in…If his proposal for funding roads is just more of the same…we have very serious concerns about that.”
Greimel noted that Snyder was light on details of the project and is awaiting more specifics on the proposal.
He also noted that Snyder did not address right-to-work.
“It’s one of those things that I don’t know if there’s anything the governor could have said that would have made everything alright…”
