Stateside for Tuesday, June 9, 2015

Today on Stateside:

  • The Detroit Red Wings surprised absolutely no one today as they presented Jeff Blashill as their 27th head coach. Michigan Radio's sports commentator John U Bacon joined us to talk about it.

  • HOUR Detroit Magazine chief wine and restaurant critic Chris Cook teaches us about what a wine’s price really means.

  • Reality TV can be used to shed light, to build bridges, and to increase understanding. Sultan Sharrief has created a show that aims to do that and more. Street Cred could put some Detroit high schoolers into the national spotlight on PBS.

  • Cole Porter’s melodies and lyrics spoke of a lifestyle that was suave and elegant. But five years after writing Night and Day, he suffered an accident that transformed his debonair life into a constant battle with excruciating pain. University of Michigan medical historian Dr. Howard Markel tells us of Cole Porter’s life before and after the incident.

  • A new report from the Hackett Group finds a growing movement by big companies to move at least some of their global business services back to the U.S. Of the top five U.S. cities most attractive to these companies, two are in Michigan: Lansing and Grand Rapids.

  • Michigan Radio reporter Lindsey Smith believes there is a lack of transparency in decisions being made about schools under state emergency management or consent agreements and decisions made by the state's Emergency Loan Board. Made of three members handpicked by the Governor, the board can lend tens of millions of taxpayer dollars to schools that are going broke.
