Strong winds, heavy rains leave many without power

An update from DTE:  Sunday, June 28, 2015 – 11 a.m.

DTE continues to make progress in restoring the nearly 150,000 customers who lost electric service Saturday due to sustained, strong winds and heavy rain that knocked down trees and power lines throughout southeast Michigan.

DTE crews have restored service to about 60,000 customers, leaving about 90,000 customers to be restored.

DTE expects the vast majority of customers to be restored by late tonight, but some customers will be out until Tuesday. Nearly 100 linemen from neighboring utilities have joined the restoration effort and DTE continues to seek additional assistance.

An update from DTE, 7 a.m. Sunday, June 28:

"Continued strong winds gusts and heavy rain Saturday through southeast Michigan knocked down trees and power lines, causing nearly 150,000 DTE Energy customers to lose electric service. DTE crews have restored service to about 40,000 customers, leaving 108,000 customers to be restored.

Outages are scattered throughout Southeast Michigan. The hardest hit counties include:

Wayne – 60,000

Oakland – 29,000

Macomb – 6,000

Washtenaw – 3,000

DTE expects the vast majority of customers to be restored by late tonight, but some customers will be out until Tuesday. Nearly 100 linemen from neighboring utilities have joined the restoration effort and DTE continues to seek additional assistance.

Wind gusts of more than 40 miles per hour have caused reports of more than 1,000 downed power lines across DTE’s Southeast Michigan service area.

Customers should stay at least 20 feet away from all power lines and anything they’re in contact with, and consider them live. They are extremely dangerous.  Customers also should heed the warning of yellow caution tape, which indicates there is a downed power line in the area.  Do not cross yellow caution tape.

Customers can report an outage, check on the status of an outage and view an outage map from their smart phones. Customers also may call DTE Energy at (800) 477-4747 to report power outages or downed lines. DTE encourages customers to use the mobile website at dteenergy.com or their iPhone or Android phone to report a power problem using the DTE Energy Outage Center app. The app is available free of charge from the Apple Store or Google Play.

Additional information on the current storm – including the online power outage map – is available at www.dteenergy.com/outage."

Another updated is expected at 11 a.m.
