Want to know where the "Millionaires who like country music" and the "Intensely Boring" live in southeast Michigan? You can find them on this handy "judgmental map."
The wholly inaccurate, satirical map takes a jab at just about everybody in the region.
It's the latest in a series of "judgmental maps" of major metropolitan regions across the U.S.
John Metcalfe of the Atlantic's City Lab writes that these maps are curated by Austin comedian Trent Gillaspie who made the map of his hometown of Denver.
Gillaspie says the goal of the map is to make broad, judgmental, overgeneralizations about everyone - so as not to offend anyone.
Here's how he explains it:
We have seen some angry comments from people, but 99 percent of things have been very positive. There are a couple things to keep in mind here: One, we encourage people to offend everyone. You can't be selective in your mockery; when you start exempting some things and lambasting others, that's when it turns into intolerance and bigotry. Two, it's important for people to take this with a grain of salt, and for mapmakers ("snarchitects," as we call them) to not feel compelled to combat any negative responses that come to the map. Leave alone the negativity and focus on the positive response.
Gillaspie says to see an example of the conversation taking a nose dive, look at the fight that occurred under the Minneapolis map.
He says the map that has made him laugh the most is the San Francisco map.
