A Waterford Township musicianwhose smiling selfie with his newly adopted dog went viral last week is being told the canine can't stay.
That's because Diggy is a pit bull, according to Waterford Township police. Sec. 3-023 a) of the Charter Township of Waterford Code of Ordinances makes it "unlawful for any person to own, possess or maintain. within the Township, any pit bull terrier."
But Diggy's owner, Dan Tillery, says the dog isn't a pit bull but rather a bulldog, which local law would permit.
Tillery adopted the dog from Detroit Dog Rescue, which had previously identified it in a Facebook post as part pit bull, part bulldog. Officers identified the dog as part pit bull during a Thursday visit to Tillery's home. While they didn't enforce the $500 fine, the Detroit Free Press reportsthey gave Tillery until today to relocate the animal.
Local police said they had received complaints about the dog, which prompted the visit. Tillery still hopes to convince authorities that Diggy is a bulldog.
