As they prepared for their 10-week summer recess, Michigan's legislators took on some challenging issues at the state Capitol in Lansing.

The Michigan Legislature has officially begun its summer vacation. Before they left, legislators considered a number of complicated issues, including Medicaid work requirements and school safety proposals.

To sort out the latest from the state capitol, Michigan Radio’s Morning Edition host Doug Tribou spoke with Rick Pluta, the Lansing bureau chief for the Michigan Public Radio Network.

In this conversation, Doug and Rick discuss:

  • Laws created in response to the Larry Nassar sexual abuse scandal
  • A provision in the state budget plan that would eliminate all state funding for Planned Parenthood
  • Medicaid work requirements mandating that all "able-bodied" recipients work at least 19 hours a week
  • A $58-million school-safety package and the possibility of changes to the state's gun laws
Rick Pluta is Senior Capitol Correspondent for the Michigan Public Radio Network. He has been covering Michigan’s Capitol, government, and politics since 1987.
Doug Tribou joined the Michigan Public staff as the host of Morning Edition in 2016. Doug first moved to Michigan in 2015 when he was awarded a Knight-Wallace journalism fellowship at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor.
